Our Volunteer/Caregiver Training is based on the extensive work of Palliative Care Victoria’s Volunteer Training Manual and Compassionate Communities, Shannon’s Bridge have been conducting training of volunteer groups. The accredited training has been made available without cost to communities and is able to be tailored to existing groups and their needs.

A Compassionate Community is one that acknowledges that care for one another at times of crisis and loss is not simply a task solely for health and social services but is everyone’s responsibility.

Living with a serious illness can be difficult. It can be hard to do the ordinary, everyday things, think about appointments or juggle the demands of caring for a loved one.

Often people want to help, but are sometimes unsure how.

Shannon's Bridge is offers FREE social and practical support to people living with palliative care needs, who may be in their last year of life.

How does it work?

  • We recruit and train volunteers to help support people

  • Upon request, members of the Bridge team would then arrange to meet a person who is living with advanced illness, and/or their family, to discuss what extra social and practical support that person may need at home.

  • We discuss, who, within the person’s circle of community, might be able to meet the needs identified (e.g. extended family, a friend or other local groups).

  • With the person’s permission, the volunteer contacts the agreed people in the community to ask them to help with the needs identified.

  • We link the person and the volunteer and watch the magic happen
